Discussion of Progress to Date
Betsy Fanning has distributed a ballot. There are edits that have to be made such as references to the PDF Reference 17, some rearranging has to occur such as the Annotations discussion appears before the Content discussion and other discrepencies. DJ would like to suggest a method of performing the edits to the Committee. DJ recommends making annotation to the PDF file and consoloating those annotations and submitting them to the Technical Editor. Ideally the first round of edits should be completed in time for ballot submission on December 15, 2008. Clean up of the text, organization, and references to tables are correct.
ISO_32000_1_2008.PDF will be the reference cited for PDF/UA cross references.
Action: GP to verify the references
Action: DJ to copy read for extraneous text, organization, and clarity.
Summary, review the draft, add markup, export the comments and send to DJ.
CE two new elements need to be addressed - alt text for tables which performs as the table summary. Also two levels of Alt Text a short version and a long version.
Address Action Items
Proposed changes to existing UA draft
UA should state that it is intended as a companion standard for other standards. PDF/UA should take a position regarding its relationship with other normative standards.
CE - this would answer some of the questions that were raised in Beijing about the possible confusion among PDF standards. This would be an informative reference.
PDF/UA is intended as a companion standard, that will be used in addition to ISO 32000, PDF/A, PDF/X and other standards as may apply to be used in conjunction for the purpose of achieving accessibility for persons with disabilities.
PDF/UA should offer clarifications for SECT, DIV, PART and other related "parasemantic" tags. The discussion will be held over to a future meeting.
Work on Post Beijing Issues (PDF/UA proposals for ISO 32000 for Germany)
PDF/UA does not include a discussion of artifacts. Should there be a formal treatment of artifacts. No objections to discussing Artifacts at a future meeting.
Tagging for documents containing line numbers was an issue raised by the UK delegation in Beijing. Proposal for <line> and <linegroup> in PDF/UA discussed.
Diversity, the last item on the action items page. Committee was prompted by 32000 to obtain more input on complex scripts and doublebyte character.
CE: Sought out folks familiar with standards in general and accessibility standards in particular. Search indicated there were experts on the issues of text from Tokyo, China, Egypt, and Israel who can assist. 2 issues involved, PDF/UA and 32000 for such issues as text direction.
Need to expand PDF/UA treatment of phonetics involving new tag requests.
MG add a new action item for tagging redacted areas of a page.
