5. US Endorsement Statement Discussion
The focus of this meeting is to come to agreement on the statement to be issued from the US. Several committee members expressed a concern about issuing such a statement. Betsy Fanning and Dave McDowell reported on a conversation they had with ANSI experts in ISO work. The bottom line of the discussions is that a statement as the committee was planning to issue in which the US endorses the standards is common and acceptable practice as long as the statement does not come from the secretariat but from the US TAG chair.
The purpose of the statement is to clarify that there are similarities between ISO/DIS 32000 and PDF 1.7 but that ISO/DIS 32000 is a much improved document. Adobe is planning to issue an errata for PDF Reference 1.7 which will correct errors that were discovered as the ISO/DIS 32000 draft was being developed. This errata will bring the PDF 1.7 and ISO/DIS 32000 into further alignment.
The committee worked on revising the draft statement. The result is as follows:
***
The US National Body committee that proposed and is supporting the work of TC171/SC2 with respect to the work item ISO 32000, wishes to communicate some background information with respect to this work and urge you to support this work in your own national body deliberations.
In preparing ISO/DIS 32000, Document management - Portable document format (PDF 1.7), PDF Reference 1.7 (including associated errata) was edited to create a document that is both easier to read and understand, and more in line with the style requirements of the international standards community. The key goals during that process were to ensure that the resultant document was technically consistent with the PDF Reference 1.7 published by Adobe in November 2006 and to also incorporate the interpretations of that specification provided by PDF application developers. We supported this action.
The members of the US technical committee who have reviewed the ISO draft and PDF Reference 1.7 agree that these documents are technically consistent.
If it would be useful to your national body to have a more detailed explanation of the process used to create the ISO Draft, Jim King of Adobe has indicated to us that he is willing to meet with any concerned national body groups as they review this proposed International Standard. Jim is the Senior Adobe PDF Platform Architect that led this effort.
We would appreciate any feedback that you can provide to us concerning this proposed work item. At your request, the US PDF committee would be pleased to help you resolve any issues resulting from your review of the standard that would help you to support this proposed work item.

The committee was in unanimous agreement with the above statement and having it issued to the respective country subject experts. (Levenson/McDowell)
AIIM is to send the statement to their technical editor for polishing and will send the final draft to the committee and to Bob Breslawski, US TAG Chair for ISO TC 171.
6. Wrap up
The committee chairs, Paul Showalter and Duff Johnson reminded the committee of the next US committee meeting which is scheduled for November 13 and 14 in San Jose, CA. AIIM Staff will draft an agenda that will be posted on the wiki and distributed to the listserv.
7. Adjourn
The US committee for the PDF Reference project meeting was adjourned at 2:06 p.m. (Wright/Gavin)
